In Human Design, your defined centers are your consistent, reliable flow of energy, and what that energy actually looks and feels like depends on the channels that define those centers. Your “definition” is where we find your concentrated gifts, your impact on others, what you are here to consistently be and express in the world.
But your undefined centers — this is where we see your inconsistent and unreliable flow of energy. And if your mind instantly goes to the negative connotation of those words, you’re not alone. Inconsistent? Unreliable? That sounds like a problem. For our mind, this is typically where we feel like we’re not enough. We get caught up in the open areas of our chart, thinking we need to be this energy, that we need to access more of it. For example, if you have an open G center – the center that rules your identity – you may become fixated on who you are, and stressed by what feels like an inconsistent expression of identity. When in reality, your undefined centers are your greatest wisdom and your biggest profit potential.
This is huge as a business owner — knowing where you are not meant to be consistent, where you are meant to actually develop wisdom and learn, because this is what becomes your profit potential. No matter what offers you’re selling, no matter if you’re a motivational speaker or a financial strategist, the open areas in your chart indicate exactly where you’re meant to “go to school in life” and develop experiential knowledge that allows you to guide others.
So if you’re looking at your chart right now, look at what is not colored in – what centers, gates, and channels are undefined? This is what we call your “openness,” and it’s where you are meant to experience, learn, and develop wisdom. That’s what we’ll be exploring in this post.
How to Find Your Undefined Centers
Before we dive into the specific themes of each center, you need to look at your Human Design bodygraph to see where your unique openness lies. Here is how to find it:
- Pull up your chart: If you don’t have it handy, you can generate your free Human Design chart on my website here using your exact birth time, date, and location.
- Look at the 9 centers: Your bodygraph features nine geometric shapes that represent your centers (AKA your hubs of energy).
- Notice the colors: Any center that is colored in is “defined.” This is where you have consistent energy.
- Find the white spaces: Any center that is white (uncolored) is “undefined” or “open.” These are your receptors, and this is where your profit potential lies.
(A quick technical note: An undefined center is white but has some colored gates extending from it. A completely open center is white with absolutely no colored gates. Both hold incredible wisdom potential, but completely open centers amplify that energy even further!)
The Not-Self vs. The Wisdom
Each of these centers has a not-self expression where you are acting out the conditioning of that center instead of the wisdom. You are not accessing the profit potential when you are in that expression. And if you want to understand each of those themes more deeply, Episode 9: The Profitability of Your Human Design Part 1 goes into the not-self themes for each center so you can start to understand what’s happening unconsciously and access that wisdom potential.
When you have developed wisdom in your openness and you are no longer living out these not-self-conditioned themes, you start to see the not-self in the world around you. And you attract people who need your wisdom.
This part is really important for you to know. You cannot sell the wisdom of your openness if you are living out the not-self expression. You can try. You can put this language on your website copy, your sales pages, talk about it in your social media, but the frequency isn’t going to be there. The frequency of that wisdom is what attracts and resonates with your fractal — the people you are meant to connect with and serve.
So when you see the not-self in the world, when you’re not stuck in it and conditioned by it, you can just see it around you. And you can sell your wisdom to those who would benefit from it.
Your Openness Is a Receptor
Your openness in your Human Design chart is a receptor. It doesn’t just attract what’s on the other side — it pulls the other side to it. It magnetizes. Whatever is open in you is going to attract what activates it, meaning what’s undefined in your chart is going to attract people with that definition.
So let’s get into the nine centers.
Undefined Head Center: Mental Pressure and Inspiration
The Head Center is the center of mental pressure and inspiration. If you have this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about what’s truly inspiring and worth thinking about. What questions must really be answered in life. You can attune to whether or not the people around you are clear and focused in their thinking.
You’re here to be wise on how to be patient, to allow life to come to you, to tune into your inner authority.
What you are selling: Inspiration. Answers to people’s doubts and confusion. How to understand your unique process of inspiration, how to detach from mental overwhelm and stress and focus on what’s really worth thinking about. You’re attracting what’s defined — so you can help people with defined Head Centers see the value of their ideas and understand their process of inspiration.
Undefined Ajna Center: Mental Awareness and Conceptualization
The Ajna Center rules our mental awareness, how we think, how we conceptualize. If you have this center undefined, you hold wisdom potential about which concepts, ideas, and opinions are truly valuable.
You are gifted with creative, flexible thinking. You’re able to consider information without accepting it as absolute truth. You can see situations from multiple perspectives. And you can attune to whether or not the people around you have a healthy mental awareness — if they are rigid and fearful in their thinking. You are designed to quite literally have an open mind. (If you have an undefined Ajna, you automatically have the Head Center undefined as well.)
Your gift is flexible thinking, open-mindedness, processing things in different ways, being fluid, helping other people overcome uncertainty and mental overwhelm. You are selling concepts and systems that people can rely on and be certain of — selling what you know to be of value to others.
You can help defined Ajnas see the value of their concepts, their ideas and beliefs. Because defined Ajnas have fixed ways of thinking, fixed ways of processing information. And there is great value in that — you can help them see the gift they may have overlooked. This really applies to any center you have undefined. You attract those who have it defined and you can help them see what they don’t.
Undefined Throat Center: Expression, Manifestation, and Action
The Throat Center rules our expression, manifestation, action — bringing things into form. If you have this center undefined, you hold wisdom potential about how to communicate with others and attract the right attention.
You can attune to whether or not the people around you are expressing themselves authentically, in the right timing. If they are taking up too much space or allowing other people to share their words, their opinions, their thoughts and ideas.
What you are selling:
- The ability to attract the right attention.
- How to get the right attention for your business.
- How to manifest, take action, and communicate in more effective ways.
- How to find your unique inner truth, your message, your authentic voice with the world.
Undefined G Center: Self, Identity, Direction, and Love
The G Center rules the self, identity, direction, and love. If you hold this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about how to find your direction in life, how to know who you truly are, how to love yourself.
You are tuned to whether or not the people around you have a healthy sense of self, if they are clear in their direction, if they are being who they truly are. You’re very sensitive to environment and being in the correct environment.
What you are selling:
- How to find the right direction in life.
- How to know yourself.
- How to love yourself,
- How to find your community. You can help defined G Center people understand who they truly are and what direction is right for them.
Undefined Heart Center: Willpower, Self-Esteem, and Ego
The Heart Center rules willpower, self-esteem, and ego. If you have this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about who has a healthy ego, who’s using their willpower correctly, who has a healthy sense of self-esteem.
You can attune to whether or not the people around you can be trusted to do what they will say. You can sense which promises and commitments are really worth keeping. You are here to be wise about self-worth — about how to avoid overextending yourself to prove your value.
What you are selling:
- Ways to know your own value and recognize your worth,
- How to love yourself from a place of self-respect and knowing your worth.
- You can help defined egos release the conditioning that suppresses them and tells them to be humble and dim their light.
- You can sell ways to value yourself, to price your offers correctly — all things related to contracts, bargains, commitments, and self-worth.
Undefined Sacral Center: Life Force, Productivity, Fertility, and Sexuality
The Sacral Center rules life force energy, productivity, fertility, and sexuality. If you have this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about productivity — how to use energy in the most efficient way, how to avoid wasting your energy on the wrong things.
You can attune to whether or not the people around you are using their energy correctly and in alignment with their true desires. You can recognize when people truly love what they do and feel satisfied by how they use their energy.
What you are selling:
- When and how to quit.
- How to stop wasting your energy on the wrong things.
- How to start using your energy to do what you love.
This is really Projectors selling efficiency and satisfaction to Generators and Manifesting Generators. Projectors have a symbiotic relationship with sacral beings — they’re seeing what’s off with how we are using our energy. They are feeling the dissatisfaction in their bodies. They see where sacral beings are dissatisfied. They can help guide their energy in the right direction. They can help sacral types wake up and change their lives in an instant, because that’s how Generators and Manifesting Generators work. They’re here to know themselves, and if you give them a key that unlocks deeper self-awareness, they can transform instantly.
If you have an undefined Sacral center, you are selling to 70% of the planet. So do not overlook this center — and especially do not overlook the conditioning you have about overworking and doing too much. You’re not going to attract Generators and Mani Gens when you’re operating from a place of depletion, burnout, stress, overwhelm, and desperation. Your wisdom is what attracts us.
Speaking from experience as a Generator who’s worked with a lot of Projectors — I want your wisdom, your awareness, I want to know what you see. Because when I receive your wisdom and your guidance, it transforms my life. And I value that greatly.
Undefined Solar Plexus Center: Emotions, Spirit Consciousness, and Feelings
The Solar Plexus Center rules our emotions, feelings, and spirit consciousness. If you have this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about emotions and emotional expression — what people are feeling. You can quite literally pick up on other people’s emotions.
You can attune to whether or not the people around you have a healthy level of emotional awareness. If they are expressing their feelings authentically, or if they are repressing them, pretending they don’t feel anything at all, or projecting their emotions out onto other people.
You have wisdom about truth, confrontation, expressing your emotions, allowing emotions to move through you without becoming attached to them. Being unapologetic in your truth.
What you are selling:
- How to experience certain emotions. Experiences that will bring you to a certain emotional state — how to feel passion, how to feel joy, how to access abundance, how to feel desire and connection.
- This could be selling someone the vacation of their dreams: “you will feel peaceful, excited, calm,” — whatever it is. “The relationship of your dreams that brings you the desire, connection, expansiveness, and romance you’ve been seeking.” “The Ferrari that will make you feel more confident than you’ve ever been.”
You can see how these selling themes can go in so many different directions. You are selling to the not-self, and it’s up to you what you sell and how you do it — and if you are in your authentic truth when you are selling, you are offering something that can really help and transform people.
Undefined Spleen Center: Instincts, Immune System, and Fears
The Spleen Center rules our instincts, our immune system, our fears. If you have this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about what is healthy for us or not. How to navigate fear related to personal stability and survival.
You are attuned to whether or not the people around you are healthy, in tune with their instincts, acting in the right timing. You hold wisdom about how to let things go, how to recognize what no longer serves us. You’re deeply connected to instinct, intuition, listening to the body.
What you are selling:
- Ways and strategies to be more healthy.
- How to experience greater wellness, how to increase your longevity, how to feel good in your body, how to heal.
- How to let go of what doesn’t serve you.
- How to find real inner stability – how to cultivate stability and safety in your life.
If you are selling to other entrepreneurs, this is a big one. Don’t overlook this center. Look at the world around you — how unpredictable and chaotic is it? Where are people lacking inner stability, confidence, foundations? Where are they lacking health, wellness, vitality? How can you help them get there? How can you bring this theme into your copy, into your social media content, no matter what it is you are selling?
Undefined Root Center: Adrenal Fuel, Motivation, and Drive
The Root Center is the other pressure center. The Head and the Root are the two pressure centers in the body graph. If you have this center undefined, you have wisdom potential about how to get things done without overextending yourself or allowing stress to dictate your life.
You are attuned to whether or not the people around you have a healthy sense of motivation, drive, and ambition. You are going to have a relationship with pressure in your life. And as you develop wisdom about how to handle pressure in a productive way — how to move at your own pace, how to not move through life with your to-do list hanging over your head with stress dictating your decisions — you learn how to use pressure to your own advantage. And you can guide other people to do the same.
What you are selling:
- Freedom from pressure.
- How to truly relax, how to delegate, how to stop burning out. This could be a tax software that takes those hours of work and confusion off of your plate. This could be social media management services that take away the pressure to show up and post every day.
- You are selling how to relax, how to let go of stress, how to free yourself from the pressures of life.
My Open Human Design Centers In Business
I want to contextualize this for you by giving you examples of how this works in my business. I have five centers undefined: the Head, Ajna, Throat, G, and Heart. The G Center, which rules identity and direction, is the only one that’s completely open — it has no gates defined whatsoever. This makes it my greatest wisdom and profit potential, but also one of my biggest struggles and challenges in life.
I dealt with the not-self themes of my G Center for literally decades, and it took a lot of deconditioning and awareness work to start to experience the true self theme of the G Center, which is freedom from being limited to one identity. I’m designed to experience many different identities and directions, and when I started to understand this, I let go of finding a consistent identity or direction. I just opened to what I was experiencing and noticing about myself in the moment, and that’s when I began to receive.
You receive in your openness. Your chart is not missing anything. You have exactly you need to do what you incarnated to do.
As I look back, I can see that I’d always been amplifying, tasting, experiencing other people’s identities and directions. I joke with my sisters that I was like the “unwanted motivational speaker” growing up — I was always talking to people about their career and what they wanted to do, and I was always like, “Yes, you should go do it. I can see you doing this. Oh my gosh, you should go after your dreams!” I just loved talking to people about these themes — which all relate to purpose, identity, and direction.
And so of course, as I started my business doing Human Design readings, before it was even official, I was just giving readings to friends, family, whoever would really listen to me talk about this. And it always centered around identity. Who are you really? What are you here to do? I’m taking you in fully. I’m tasting that expression and reflecting it back to you.
Even if a client doesn’t necessarily know the unconscious reasons they’re drawn to me, it is likely connected to this theme of, “This person is going to help me understand who I really am, who I’m not, and how that impacts every other area of my life.”
I also have an undefined Throat Center. So a big theme of my work is helping people understand their unique message. What is their perspective and what does that look like in the world? How do they get the right attention with their business? And how do they correctly value their services? That’s my undefined Heart — the ego.
So all of the openness is working together. But it’s really the open G Center that draws people to me more than anything else. I have Gate 14 defined in my Sacral Center leading up to my open G Center. So I attract a lot of defined G Center people with Gate 2. That Gate 2 connects to my Gate 14 and forms the Channel of the Beat. Which is all about discovering your unique direction, the direction for your gifts by being tuned into the frequency of the moment. They have the direction in that Gate 2, and I provide the resources from my Gate 14 to get their business where it needs to go.
And I cannot tell you how cool it is to see this in action. I attract what I am not, and I offer wisdom from where I’ve developed it. And only then.
When I was in the not-self expression of my G Center — searching for identity, sdirection, who am I, who’s going to love me, who should I be, where should I go — I was not able to correctly express my wisdom in the world. It was in my mid-20s when I started doing parts work that I began understanding what was really going on (and the conditioning that had been holding me back). This is when everything softened — where I began to release that conditioning and tune into my true self.
Look at Your Chart
So, coming back to this conversation about profit potential — I really encourage you to look at your chart. See what is open, from your centers to your gates. This is where you are attracting others.
Look at the true self-expression, the wisdom potential of your undefined and open centers. Does that wisdom resonate? I imagine it does. This is what you want to lean into in your messaging, in your offer suite, what you are selling to people. This is what’s coming through.
And it’s not like you have to strategically choose one center to focus on or combine all your centers together. It’s more about learning this so that you can just embody it. It can be natural. Whatever is open in you is attracting the activation on the other side. The more grounded you are in the true wisdom and easeful expression of your undefined centers, the more you’re going to naturally attract the people you are meant to work with — the exact people seeking the wisdom you hold.
