If you’ve gone down the rabbit hole of Human Design, you know how easy it is to spend hours learning every aspect of your chart (down to the amino acids you may need more of based on your defined or transiting Gates). And as fun and riveting as that rabbit hole can be, something I often bring people’s attention back to in readings is the basic mechanics of their Type.

This is because, A: there is so much misinformation on Types out there that makes Human Design far more confusing than necessary, and B: your Type is what creates your Aura: the invisible electromagnetic field that surrounds you, extending about two arm lengths from your body. It’s your mode of non-verbal communication and the mechanic that determines how you interact with the world around you.
Your aura introduces you before you ever speak a word. For example, let’s say you’re a Manifestor: because you have a closed aura, people might describe you as having a really strong presence but also being a little “hard to understand” because — unlike the other Types — we can’t energetically get into your closed aura (read on to learn exactly why). This is a distinct and remarkable Aura to encounter out in the wild, when 91% of the people we encounter have a partially or or completely open Aura.
Understanding your Type means understanding the mechanics of your energy field. When you begin working with your natural mechanics, this helps you reduce resistance and move through life with less friction (kind of like finally putting premium fuel into a luxury vehicle after years of getting by on low-octane gas).
There are 4 energy Types — Generators and Manifesting Generators are technically the same auric Type, though their energy functions differently — which help us understand a person’s natural strengths, challenges, and how their energy works best. Each Type has a unique Strategy they can use to successfully engage with life and attain their Signature Theme (inner state of alignment).
Your Type also has a Not-Self Theme that describes the resistance you feel when living out of alignment with your Strategy and natural flow of energy.

Generators
The Classic Builders
35% of population
Generators are the “doers” and creative powerhouses of the world, possessing sustainable life-force energy. You are designed to master tasks and bring ideas to life through a methodical, step-by-step process. By directing your sacral power only to what generates a physical energetic response, you ensure that you build and sustain the right things and receive the correct resources in return for your work, which helps you avoid frustration.
- Aura: Open and enveloping. It feels magnetic, grounded, and welcoming, like a warm hug that pulls life and opportunities toward you. Because your aura is open, you don’t need to go out and chase things; your strategy is to let your aura magnetize the world to you so you can respond.
- Role: To be satisfied builders who master their craft. You uplift everyone around you when you do work that energizes you.
- Operational Style: You have access to incredible energy but must use it up completely during the day to sleep well. You’ll typically experience stages of plateaus and uplevels as you build mastery.
- Success Strategy: Wait to Respond
- Natural Gift: Mastery

- True-Self (Aligned): Satisfaction.
Manifesting Generators
The Express Builders

A sub-type of the Generator, Manifesting Generators are multi-passionate creators who are designed to move quickly, find efficiencies, and often skip steps to find the fastest path. Like Generators, you’re here to direct your sacral power toward what generates a physical response, but your motor-to-throat connection allows you to act on your response with significant speed. Following your sacral response ensures you build and sustain the right things and receive the correct resources in return for your work, thus avoiding frustration.
- Aura: Open and enveloping. Your energy is energizing, welcoming, and deeply magnetic. When you’re aligned and waiting to respond rather than forcing initiation, your aura naturally pulls the right opportunities into your orbit. It’s juicy, uplifting, and creates a sense of availability that draws life to you.
- Role: To bring ideas to life quickly and efficiently. You are likely multi-passionate and may have many different interests that contribute to your unique business or career.
- Operational Style: Unlike the steady, focused pace of the Generator, Mani Gens move in leaps and bounds. You’re designed to “test the waters” and may pivot or change course frequently, but this doesn’t mean constantly starting and stopping. If you find yourself constantly jumping between things and experiencing a frustrating lack of success, this is a sign of misalignment that can come from initiating and not waiting to respond.

PROJECTORs
The Advisors

Projectors are the guides, seers, and administrators. You are not here to “do” or “build” in the traditional sense, but rather to guide the energy of others and improve systems. When Projectors are recognized and invited to contribute their gifts, they excel at organizing and leading individuals, groups and projects. Accepting the right invitations brings great success to tou life, and accepting the wrong ones — or pushing forward without any invitation at all — can lead to bitterness and depleted resources.
- Aura: Focused, penetrative, and absorbing. Your aura is designed to zoom in on one person at a time, penetrating the aura of the other person to deeply see and understand them in a way no other type can. Because your aura can feel somewhat invasive when it’s directed toward someone, it requires consent to work correctly. This is why it’s important to wait for an invitation — your guidance is only effective when the other person is open to receiving it.
- Role: To manage, guide, and direct energy. Your value lies in what your awareness and what you see, not how much you do.
- Operational Style: You have inconsistent sacral energy and need to rest before you hit fatigue. Your thrive when mastering specific systems or areas of knowledge.
- Success Strategy: Wait to be Invited

MANIFESTORs
The Innovators

Manifestors are the initiators, innovators, and pioneers of the world. You’re the only type designed to initiate action independently and get things off the ground without waiting for external cues. The Manifestor strategy of informing people of your plans helps you avoid interference — which can lead to your not-self theme of anger — and attract the right people to help you build and sustain your creations.
- Aura: Closed and repelling. While “repelling” can sound harsh, this is actually a form of protection (some of the most inspiring figures of our time, like Maya Angelou, Chadwick Boseman, and Frida Kahlo, were Manifestors). Your aura acts as a shield that pushes obstacles and incorrect people out of the way when needed, creating a contained, undisturbed space for your creative flow. This is why your energy can feel intense to others — it’s designed to clear a path for you to move freely.
- Role: To move from divine inspiration, initiate new ideas, and impact others.
- Operational Style: You work in surges of energy followed by necessary rest cycles, and you require freedom and autonomy over your schedule to work most effectively.
- Success Strategy: Inform (to avoid interference and delays)
- Natural Gift: Innovation

- Not-Self (Out of Alignment): Anger (often from feeling controlled or meeting resistance).
- True-Self (Aligned): Peace.
REFLECTOR
The Evaluators

Reflectors are the “seers” and barometers of the world, reflecting the health of the community around them. You’re able to sample energy to identify what’s new or different, and when in the right environment, you’re skilled at providing objective assessments of the people, projects, ideas, and cultures around you. With the moon as their guide, Reflectors receive feedback from the moon as it passes through each gate in the wheel. For large decisions, waiting out a full lunar cycle can help you receive the clarity and perspective you need to move forward.
- Aura: Sampling and resistant. You sample the energy of your environment without absorbing or being conditioned by it.
- Role: To evaluate and judge the functionality of your community. You are a fluid being who changes with your environment and the phases of the lunar cycle.
- Operational Style: Your energy is inconsistent and depends heavily on who you’re with and where you are. Being in the right environment is critical for you wellbeing.
- Success Strategy: Wait a Lunar Cycle
- Natural Gift: Assessment
